Description of the Club's Competitions
Background
Prizes.
Prizes at BBC are typically a bottle of champagne though there are alternatives
where preferred.
Eligibility for Club Competitions.
Results only qualify for club competitions if all members of the
playing partnership are members. Ineligible partnerships can play in all events
but their results will be shown in black and
excluded from relevant competition. Non-members names are
printed in upper case.
Outline of the Club Year.
The club playing year commences on June 1st when member renewals are
complete. It is divided into four quarters.
Summer Jun 1 -
August 31st
Autumn Sept 1 -
November 30th
Winter
Dec 1 - February 28th
Spring March 1 - May 31
Each playing day has its own competitions. Both Wednesdays and Thursdays have
a Ladder Competition. Both days
have a Championship Pairs. Thursday also has a Teams Event
Ladder Competitions
The quarterly Ladders are individual competitions using the results from every pairs event in the quarter.
Player's scores are handicapped according to the average result in the previous
quarter. Results are based on the sum of each
player's best 8 handicapped scores in the period..
In each period we use a handicap calculated
from the players results in the previous quarter. It works like a golf
handicap except that we use decimal handicaps. If you
average 47% in the Summer Ladder, your handicap for the Autumn Ladder will be
50 divided by 47% = 1.06. Conversely, if you average 53% , your handicap
will be 50%/53% = .94 Using a decimal handicap, the total of the scores in a competition
can easily be handicapped by multiplying the total by the handicap value.
You need 5 scores in a quarter to achieve a handicap. Less frequent players are
normally given a default handicap of 1.0, but the committee awards
higher default handicaps to players with high Master Point ratings.Handicaps are calculated for all players
in anticpation of possible membership..
The BBC Championship Pairs
This competition occurs in the Autumn, Winter
and Spring periods of each year. It is the premier competition in the club
calendar. It is unhandicapped and aims to establishe the best pair in the club
for the year. There are 8 events
in the competiton. Each pair's best 5 positions in the 8 events are
summed. (.e. g. three firsts, a second and a 5th scores
10. ) The pair with the
lowest score wins the competition.
The BBC Teams Championship
There are five Teams events in the Thursday calanedar between Sept and the following
May. The committee will be experimenting with a new competition in 2011-12.
Teams will be formulated randomly by the committee based on the attending pairs.
There will be a spare pair at each event to guarantee all attending pairs a
gaim.
Teams events will be scored as usual in IMPS. However the competition is
for pairs and the winner will be the pair with the hightest total imp score
based on their best three results in the five events.
