Scoring and Deals at Bawburgh BC
What Do We Provide
Using Bridgemate terminals, instead of paper travellers to record the scores
enables the club to update the results for the event for each hand as it is
played, and display the running results whilst the event is in progress. At
the end of the event you can see the final result as soon as the last hand has
been played, and request a print out to take home.
Event results, are emailed to players' homes shortly after the event. The
package we send contains-
a. The Result ranking list
b. Travellers The hand is displayed at the head of the each traveller. The
traveller includes the declarer contract, the opening lead, the tricks
made, as well as the match points scored.
c. A personal score card for each partnership
d. A hand list which shows the maximum tricks each player could have made in
each suit, had he been declarer.
This information is also available for all events
during the last two years on the website,. We believe these service
constitute the finest environment for improving your bridge in Norfolk
We Do This with the Items Shown Below
Bridgemate Terminal
Club Computer
PreDealt Hands

A Bridgemate Terminal is placed on every table. It has
dedicated keys for the suits, the honour cards and for the sitting
positions, N/S & E/W. The screen shows six lines of information and can be
scrolled , so it easily shows the whole traveller. There are four keys just
below the screen providing short cuts, for example for E/W
when they accept the result recorded by North. The terminal uses the club's
"wifi " network to talk to the club computer all the time, sending input and
receiving results.

At the start of play, North enters each player's number into the terminal.
Thereafter players are identified by name. (Player numbers are displayed on the
club notice board for everyone who has ever played at BBC. New
visitors are assigned a number when they arrive.) The Bridgemate
terminal tells North the names of the pair or team he
is expecting and which boards he should be playing. At the end of the
round North is told what to do with the boards, where the moving couples are
going and the current position of both partnerships on the ranking list
for the event.
Contracts and results are entered directly into the Bridgemate terminal
by North. To enter a contract as 3 spades by North , press the 3 key,
the spade key and the North Key. To show that the opening lead was the Ace of
Hearts, press the Ace Key and the Heart Key. To show the contract result you
enter = , +1 or -2 etc. When North has entered the result,
the contract and tricks are verified by East or West. If the score is wrong,
pressing 'Cancel' provides an opportunity to correct all the information
entered.. When both pairs have agreed the score, the terminal shows the score
and, subsequently, the whole traveller, incorporating that score. On the
traveller, results arelisted in NS order. First on the list is a top
for North South;. and the last result us a top top for E/W.
Before commencing input for the next board, North can cancel and re-input
any of the scores for the current round. After that, the scores can still
be corrected but you need the Bridgemate operator's help for this. He will only
do this if he is persuaded that both sides have agreed the change.
At the end of the round the terminal now shows each pair's
position in the ranking in the results and the % achieved so far. At the
end of the session the terminal now shows a player score card for each pair.
Club Computer
When the result is verified by E/W, it is transmitted wirelessly to
the club computer. The result is added to the scoring
system for the event and a running result for the event is displayed on
the right hand screen in the format of a normal bridge result web page.
When the last hand is played and all corrections to the scoring have been made,
the running result is the final one for the event.
Pre-dealt Hands All play at Bawburgh Bridge Club is
with pre-dealt hands. Each hand is randomly generated by the club computer in
advance. The computer is instructed to ensure that the points balance
between N/S and E/W to within half a percent over the afternoon. It also
ensures that in every hand at least one player has 12 points, so
there are few passed-out hands. However the main advantage of pre-dealt hands is
in the information we can provide to the players for post mortems, discussed in
the first paragraph.
